Kurukuru star on trial with Galatasaray



KURUKURU futsal sensation Jack Whetney sneaked out of the country last Sunday destined for Istanbul in Turkey.



The young exciting footballer is heading to Istanbul to undergo trials with Turkish football giants and former UEFA Cup champions Galatasaray S.K.



Although the details of his deal were not clear, it is understood Wetney was scouted by an Australian agent for a 1st division club in Istanbul.



However, it is understood the Galatasaray football management heard he was heading their way and opted to sneak him upon arrival in Istanbul from the 1st division club.



Mr Whetney might not be more of a house-hold name in the Solomon Islands but he has risen to become one of the best forwards in the Pacific, having to stamp a name for himself in the world futsal arena.



His recent stunt with Amical FC of Vanuatu has also made an impact on his profile, appearing in all their O’league matches.



Kurukuru team manager Mapuru Tausinga confirmed Whetney’s travel over the weekend.



He said they decided to keep it silent until all the paper work was done and he was confirmed to depart before going public.



Mapuru encouraged Whetney before he left that he must make the best of it and do his best not only for himself but for the Solomon Islands.



“The trials will be tough but our only hope is that he makes it through and not only creates history for this country but opens up the door for our young upcoming talents,” he said.



He said they had to rush around Friday last week to sort out his visas which he eventually flew out yesterday.



He is expected to arrive in Istanbul today via Singapore.



“Two teams are expected to meet him there and that is Galatasaray and a 1st division club so who knows what will happen when he arrives,” Mapuru said.



Whetney’s biggest test in life will begin when he is expected to begin his trials tomorrow.



Mapuru said Whetney’s travel could not be made possible if it wasn’t for businessman Yoshi Sato and Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) general secretary Eddie Ngava.



“I would like to thank these two people for assisting Jack,” he said.



Meanwhile, Whetney in an email to Star Sport from Brisbane last night said he was looking forward for the challenge.



“I’m looking for a positive outcome,” he said.



He said only after the trials would determine his fate.



Two of the country’s prolific footballers Benjamin Totori and Judd Molea in the past had also offered similar trials but missed out.



In 2008, Totori went for trials with Portland Timbers in USA but returned to Waitakere United due to injury.



Molea on the other hand, traveled to France to join Lyon and Strasbourg but fall short of making it through.



Therefore, if young Whetney makes it through the trials, this would go down in the history books as the first island nation lad to make it to the world professional level.



He could be rubbing shoulders with Galatasaray big names like Socceroos duo Harry Kewell and Lucas Neil, Brazilian footballer and former Juventus player Felipe Melo, French player Frank Ribery, Turkish Hakan Sukur to name a few.



Galatasaray is a Turkish football club, part of the Galatasaray multi-sport club of Istanbul.



The club holds the joint record for the Turkish Super League titles until the 2010–11 season, and the highest number of Turkish Cups.



It is one of the three European clubs to ever achieve a continental quadruple, by winning the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the Turkish Super League Championship and the Turkish Cup in 2000.
